Artistic Production, Processes and Technological StudiesThis proposal aims to study and plan the foundations for creating an online platform that will compile information about artistic production in film and video in Portugal between 1950 and 2010. In Portugal, as in other countries, film and video have been fundamental artistic media in the expansion, alteration, and redefinition of artistic practices. Since the late 1950s, and particularly from the 1960s and 1970s, several Portuguese artists began to work with film and video, a practice that intensified and became widespread with the accessibility of digital technology in the 1990s. Since then, the artistic exploration of moving images has seen significant growth among Portuguese artists. However, a substantial portion of this artistic production remains unknown and difficult to access, with no structured or panoramic view available. This current proposal stems from a previous research project, the Catalogue of Films and Videos by Portuguese Artists (CFVAP), developed between 2013 and 2015 from IHA-FCSHL and made publicly accessible through a website hosted at the University of Porto, where it was available until 2023. The CFVAP platform was enriched with content and contributions from various researchers and was also supported by the CHIC project (Cooperative Holistic view on Internet and Content), coordinated by INESCTE (UP) and concluded in 2020. Due to software version incompatibilities, CFVAP was taken offline, prompting the need to rethink and reimplement the project, updating and enhancing it towards creating a more comprehensive research project in its objectives, with greater dissemination potential and enhanced technological stability. The proposing research team is composed of Andreia Magalhães, PhD from FBAUP and Assistant Lecturer since 2020, Vera Carmo, and Ana Martins, both doctoral scholarship holders from FCT and researchers at I2ADS. All the researchers have worked in different phases of the CFVAP project and have conducted specific research in the field of the history of artistic production and curation of moving images in Portugal. They propose that this project should be aligned with the R&D line – Artistic Production, Processes, and Technological Studies at I2ADS. Currently, there is no comprehensive database in Portugal on this field of study. Research on moving images in the visual arts has been developed by research units in Portugal, such as CITAR (Research Center for Science and Technology of the Arts at the School of Arts, Catholic University) and AIM (Association of Researchers in Moving Image). However, no platform, archive, or publication has been created to provide a global and organized view of this artistic heritage, which, due to its technological nature, is subject to greater degradation, obsolescence, and disappearance. We consider this project relevant as it provides visibility and fosters a growing area of research at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP), and has the potential to be intensified.
