Ligatures

https://ligatures.fba.up.pt/

Ligatures is a Special Interest Group (SIG) that explores the multifaceted nature of letterforms. The term “ligatures” refers to the joining of different shapes into unique forms in calligraphy and typography. This symbolizes the group’s aim to connect cultural, political, technological, and health challenges through a design-based methodology. By investigating script, calligraphy, and typographic designs across different cultures and technologies, the group aims to uncover the rich tapestry of human expression through written language.

The research spans historical techniques, contemporary digital practices, and speculative future-oriented design, with a commitment to addressing societal challenges and fostering a sustainable and inclusive world.

Mission
The Ligatures SIG aims to:

  • Promote cultural and heritage preservation;
  • Foster intergenerational and intercultural networks;
  • Advocate for equality and celebrate diversity;
  • Encourage sustainable behaviors and address climate change;
  • Support safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives in an evolving society;
  • Champion peace, inclusion, and the value of diversity.

Research & Development Topics

  • Historical Research: Exploring the history of graphic design, including designers, communities, and legacies. Studying past techniques to understand their impact and relevance to contemporary processes and creations.
  • Technological Research: Investigating traditional tools and processes, such as writing, graffiti and calligraphy, lead and wood type, typewriters, and letterpress printing. Exploring how these can be integrated into modern hybrid design approaches.
  • Contemporary Digital Typeface Design: Analyzing the state-of-the-art in font design, development tools, aesthetics, and functionality. Extending from the Latin alphabet to multi-script writing systems of other languages and alphabets (Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Indic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean).
  • Speculative and Future-Oriented Design: Exploring advances in parametric, dynamic, and generative systems, including Artificial Intelligence, to imagine the future of type design and its social implications.
