Submissions Guidelines

A few things to remember before submitting your proposal

HUB accepts the following types of articles:

• Full and Short papers
• Project-based articles (exhibitions and/or reviews)

Full and Short Papers

Articles must be original. If parts have already been published, substantial new content must be provided. A short paper may differ from full paper submission in terms of length* as well as the possibility of being a Work in Progress, a Review article, or an Essay.

Articles will be published using the Research Catalogue (RC)*. RC is an artistic research platform that allows each author to adopt the type of media and visual structure that best suits the research objectives and process.

Project Article

We invite embodied experiments in art, design, and performance that push the boundaries of discursivity in artistic research. A project article results from original work developed as artistic research, to provide an argument or a discussion within a critical framework. It may include different types of visual media intertwined with text, video or audio material.

Project articles will be published using the RC and may also be submitted in the form of a single video format. A video article documents and shares the results of research in which embodied practice is an essential part of the methodology. It can intertwine video and audio recordings with still images, graphics, speech, and textual material.

Checklist for Submissions

• Author details
  Make sure you have your RC Profile Page with the updated personal information, contacts, and affiliation.
• Disclosure statement
  Make sure to acknowledge any financial interest or benefit that has arisen from the direct applications of your research and to identify it in your submission.
• Funding details
  Please supply all details required by your funding and grant-awarding bodies as follows: This work was supported by the [Funding Agency] under Grant [Grant Number]. This information may be included in the Acknowledgements or in the Disclosure statement.
• Language
  Submissions can be written in English or Portuguese. Title and abstract must be submitted in both language.
• Body text
  A full paper should be 4500 to 6000 words long. A short paper should be 1500 to 3000 words long. A project article should be 1500 to 3000 words long.
• Structure
  The structure of the main text is the responsibility of each author and should contain a Title, an Abstract (up to 250 words), and three to five keywords in addition to a clear and properly formatted Introduction, Conclusion, and References sections (or equivalents).
• Media content
  All media files should ensure quality for web display and must be loaded directly into RC (external links must be avoided). Images should be high quality (RGB mode, 72 DPI at the correct size). The RC accepts JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and TIFF image formats. All common audio and video formats are also accepted and it will automatically be converted to a web compatible format. Audio is transcoded to 256 kbps MP3, and video to MP4 with the original resolution.
• Tables
  Tables should present new information rather than duplicating what is in the text. Readers should be able to interpret the table without reference to the text.
• Hyperlinks
  External links should be set to open in a new window.
• Reading time (for project articles)
  The time required to view or explore a project article in the RC platform cannot be longer than one hour.
• Video articles
  A project article submitted in a single video format should be a maximum of 20 minutes in total length. It must also present a title (with subtitle when applicable) and have narration or captions in the Journal’s accepted languages.
• References
  Should be formatted according to the 7th edition of the APA Publication Manual.
• Copyright and third-party material
  Copyrights should be secured by the author(s). Author(s) must obtain the necessary permissions to reuse third-party material in your article. If you wish to include any material in your paper for which you do not hold copyright, and which is not covered by this informal agreement, you will need to obtain written permission from the copyright owner prior to submission.

How to Submit your Proposal

Articles will be published using the Research Catalogue (RC). RC is an artistic research platform that allows each author to adopt the type of media and visual structure that best suits the research objectives and process.

To submit a proposal to HUB, author(s) must:
• 1. Register a full acccount in the RC
  When you register an account in the RC, you will start with a basic account. You must upgrade to a full account by logging in, and clicking “Request Upgrade”, to be able to create expositions*. This process may take a couple of days to be completed.
  * Exposition is the name of custom-designed webpages created in the RC. This term is a synonym for what we call a paper or an article.
• 2. Create an exposition
  On your RC Profile Page, click on the “Create Exposition” button and choose an editor type to start creating your article (we recommend choosing between graphical or block). Once you do this, you will be asked to fill in some information regarding your submission (you can change that information later). After that, you will be able to create the exposition itself. Please be aware that for every entry (content or media), you must provide a corresponding license (RC uses the Creative Commons).
• 3. Submit for review to HUB
  When you exposition is finished, go to your Profile Page and access the exposition menu in the right bottom corner. Click on "Submit for Review" and select the HUB — Journal of Research in Art, Design and Society. Confirm by clicking on the "Submit" button.
