Relationship between Mathematics and Music Systematization of contents according to the Programs of Mathematics from 5th to 12thgrades of Portuguese Education

ABSTRACT

The connections between mathematics and music have been investigated for thousands of years. This article consists of a systematization of the associations between mathematical contents and musical contents. The latter were divided into Theory and musical analysis, Acoustics and Musical composition. Consecutively, the contents of each musical theme were systematized based on the organization of domains of mathematical contents of the Mathematics Program of Portuguese Basic Education and themes of mathematics of Mathematics Programs A and B of the 11th and 12th grades of Portuguese Secondary Education. We conclude that the musical contents are associated with the mathematical areas of Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, and specifically geometry.
