The graphic imagens in the Internet: Shape, Referentiality and Performativity. Doctoral Thesis in Sociology, Faculdade de Economia da Universidade de Coimbra

This research study, O desenho na Internet, forma, referencialidade e performatividade (Drawing on the Internet, form, referentiality and performativity), is focused on the analysis of the drawing of information viewers created specifically for the Internet. It is part of a sociological approach to the operational strategies of critical theory, in its emancipator side, trying to articulate them with the media theory, with the theory and philosophy of art, and also with the information aesthetics. It is part of an open perspective of drawing, of the philosophies and theories of design, and it takes into account the contributions of the theories of vision, psychology and neurology.

The methodology followed includes: i) extensive review of literature on the role of drawing throughout history, collecting information and documents on two hundred and eighteen information viewers, charts of information and geographical maps of information; ii) qualitative analysis of the design of information viewers in two phases – the first phase is on the analysis of a sample of one hundred and seventeen information viewers so as to relate the three dimensions of design – shape, referentiality and performativity – and to understand the role of drawing in these products; and the second phase is based on the analysis of the drawing of the most representative information viewers, distributed in areas of referentiality: Internet, eb    sites, databases, social networks, texts, numbers and quantities, sounds and music, engineering and science, emancipation, surveillance, architecture and art in order to show the role played by these products in the construction of social knowledge.

At the conclusion, interesting considerations are suggested about the most important hypothesis of this research on the validation of the place of drawing in information viewers that is thought to be of great importance on the level of the role of drawing, as evidenced by the information viewers, both in the creative element evidenced in the project phase and in its intrinsic qualities that represent our visual intelligence, which allows us to check  and view the information contained in the statistical data shown in the diagrammatic interfaces of information viewers; and finally in the role of information viewers and their contribution to the emancipation as well as to the construction of social knowledge.
