Benefícios da aprendizagem musical no desempenho académico de alunos portugueses


Musical learning is associated with academic performance, although some literature does not support this association. This research aims to analyze the opinion of directors and teachers about the influence of musical learning in academic performance of students who attend this type of teaching in schools in which the Specialized Artistic Education of Music is taught. We have done a content analysis in responses to four directors and twenty teachers of students who attend the Basic Courses of Music and Gregorian Chant in the 3rd cycle of Portuguese Basic Education. Of the 24 units of analysis we defined units of registration, which resulted in a classification into three categories: (1) Cause-and-effect indetermination between musical learning and academic achievement, (2) Non-musical benefits not exclusive of musical learning, and (3) Non-musical benefits due to musical learning, representing this category 89.6% of the Units of Registration of directors and 93.0% of teachers. The benefits in academic achievement were set out in second place by the directors and in last place by the teachers, in comparison to gains in two other emerging domains in the third category: Social and personal development and cognitive abilities. We conclude that the effects of musical learning indicated by directors and teachers extend far beyond the benefits in academic achievement. The results were discussed taking into account the influence that the professional function of the respondents on the assessment of the effects of musical learning in academic achievement, as well as in the fields of social and personal development and cognitive abilities may have. The results of our study support the literature that refers the non-musical benefits arising from musical learning.
