Design and Social Responsability – Cooperation between School and social solidarity movement

During the academic years 2004/05 a partnership was developed between the Art School of Porto (ESAP) and the Institution for Social Solidarity: Conversas de Rua – Association, from Lisbon. This partnership resulted as a pedagogic subject of  a discipline in the 2nd year of the Art and Communication Course, involving all the students.

To create all graphic supports as mediums used by educators of the Association in their social actions, the students developed their designs through various stages of methodological principles. This methodological path had three basilar steps (macrostruture) in common with all design projects, as reported by Gui Bonsiepe. Within these steps were developed many other, according to the nature of this specific communication project (microstruture).

The quality of results and the significance of this partnership led some entities to agree to finance most of the production projects. Two exhibitions were made and some of the flyers and products designed by students are currently in use.

This project left the academic setting to activate the meaning of its purpose – to inform and achieve an specific target. Also, the students put their creativity at the service of a cause for young people like them.

We intend to share this educational experience because we recognize that the school can be an ideal place to cross pedagogical intentions. At the same time that the students are developing technical and creative skills, they can also have the opportunity for direct contact with civil society on issues where their work is valuable, developing a sense of responsibility and professional ethics.

This project was the beginning of many others, including to the SOS Racism Association. Your browser may not support display of this image.

We believe in the emotional involvement of the student and the usefulness of the proposals given in class as major enhances of learning.
