Art and Vanguard – Portugal, 1968 – April 1974

This master tesis (1999) presents a historical approach to Portuguese contemporary art in a wider international perspective.  Considering the political, economic and cultural circumstances, it revues the Portuguese art world in the sixties and the first half of the seventies. Rich in data and bibliography, the work concludes that the last period of dictatorship allowed the emergence and the flourishing of an art market and started the way to reestablish the historical European cultural connections of Portugal. One concludes that the phenomena of regression, vanguard and unexpected complex hybridism characterize the art production of this period.
