The proliferation of nontangible visual projects of generative character, developed in the computer, is the motive for the development of this dissertation that is involved in the contextualization of Generative Art and its operating peripheries, for better understanding and distinction between what can be generative, and the experiences that then one keeps.

The study initiates with the definition of the concept; followed by the contextualization in time and cultural space; afterwards analyzes the medium of action, the code; investigates the material and the strategies adopted by the artists that choose diverse mathematical concepts and biological explorations; situates and evaluates the relation between the author, the project and the user of the generative systems; and finally, experiment an algorithm, as form of showing the previously enumerated items.

During research some inherent emergent questions arise and were proposed for reflection: Which is the concept and pertinence of the generative project beyond the delight or retinal experience? Which is the relevance of Generative Art, in the general context of Contemporary Art? Which are the methodologies of the creative process in Generative Art? In which way are the visual artists involved in software programming?
