Drawing as Grotesque — Paula Rego and the Portuguese Popular Visual Culture


This article discusses the works of the series “Operas” of Paula Rego, the Portuguese and British artist. We present a formal and technical analysis of the drawings and establish various formal connections with the seventeenth-century
Portuguese tile tradition in terms of its popular character. An interpretation is developed, founded on the idea of the grotesque as a cultural factor that is speculated to be a historical constant of Portuguese visuality.
