Since 1990, guitarist Alan Licht has spanned the worlds of indie rock, experimental music, and sound installation, appearing on close to 100 recordings and touring the world in the process. Licht has also written extensively about the arts for the WIRE, Artforum, Modern Painters, Art Review, Film Coment, Sight & Sound, Village Voice, Time Out New York, and other publications. He is the editor of the book-length conversation Will Oldham on Bonnie Prince Billy (faber & Faber/W.W. Norton, 2012) and the author of Sound Art: Beyond Music, Between Media, (Rizzoli, 2007), the first extensive survey of the genre in English, and An Emotional Memoir of Martha Quinn (Drag City, 2002), an extended personal essay in which the author addresses the ancient question: “Do you want New Wave or do you want the truth?” In his lecture at Serralves he will revisit his reckonings with predetermined and improvised musics in the 90s as they relate to his current work with Title TK.
