In the talk, Kyung Hwa Shon will present her research project investigating the reciprocal relation between a city and the imagination through the eyes of a city phantom, Stillman. The research implies to understand the identity of urbanites’ perception and behavior from the viewpoints of history and theory of fine arts and architecture, philosophy, social sciences, and psychoanalysis. Shon’s art practice focuses on the rediscovery of psychological heteromorphic identification, the presence of invisible substance, and fantastic visual experiences emanating from serendipitous moments of glitch in the city. The work implies the opening of the urban landscape to a distinct poetics of the city in which mythology, sign, symbol, voice, text, and trace occurs. Her wide ranging practice includes printmaking, installation, painting, photography, sound, and writing.

Lives and works in Seoul and London. Shon has studied internationally at the Royal College of Art, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Hong-Ik University, and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. Shon was a Starr scholar at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Her current research project has focused on the relationships between an identity of city and imagination. The city as a field of excavation provides the rediscovery of psychological heteromorphic identification, the presence of invisible substance, and fantastic visual experiences emanating from serendipitous moments of glitch. Shon has shown her artwork internationally at the Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, Alternative Space Loop, Blyth Gallery at the Imperial College, Dyson Gallery at the Royal College of Art, Royal Academy of Arts, the Korean Cultural Service New York, and the Korean Cultural Centre in UK, and so on.
